A spontaneous hike on the Berkeley Fire Trail with Kiana on 8 October, 2018. Little did we know, that was the day that SpaceX launched an Argentinian Earth observation satellite from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. As I was finishing up the time lapse of the sunset over the Golden Gate, I noticed a giant blob of iridescent cloud in the southern sky. Within minutes, the blob expanded and diffused, and the white trail of the rocket exhaust suspended in the air like a bright comet. The rainbow colours of the exhaust cloud was caused by the fortunate timing of the launch—just after sunset. In this narrow window, the sunlight illuminated the cloud in the upper atmosphere, while the rest of the sky had turned dark. The unexpected sight was both mesmerising and eery. The knowledge that it was a rocket launch by SpaceX made it all the more exciting.
